Sitting there in confusion, Tom couldn't help but keep thinking about the girl and the number. It could be either one of their numbers, but how does Tom even figure it out? He can't just automatically text and ask who it is, that's stupid. Sighing, he kept looking at the girl in front. It seems like she's been trying to avoid him for the rest of class time.
Maybe he was right. Maybe her friend did tell her to stop talking to him. All Tom could do now is just listen to the teacher and jot down some notes and listen to other students speak. Once the bell rang, Tom noticed that she quickly gathered her things with her bag and walked out of the classroom, not giving even Tom a second glance.
Well, not much I can do about it. Gathering his things, he grabbed his backpack and headed back to his locker where he usually meets up with Ned. Walking past the crowded hallway, he noticed Ned already standing there, waiting for him. Seeing his face was relieving. He would finally be able to talk to someone about what happened.
"Hey Ned, you wouldn't guess what happened at class tonight." Raising an eyebrow, he began to question. "What happened? Did you get punched? Because I noticed that you and Bryce have the same class together." Shaking his head, he let out a slight chuckle. "Nah dude, I actually got a girl's phone number tonight." Ned's eyes widened so big, it almost looked like they were about to pop off from disbelief. "You're joking right? How did you even manage to do that?"
Shrugging, Ned quickly scoffed. "They're probably just pranking you, dude. How did you manage to get a girl's phone number this quick? Besides, we both know we have shit luck when it comes to girls." I mean, Ned could be right. What if this was a prank? Showing him the phone number on the note, he shrugged. "I'm just confused on what I should do. Do you think I should try to text it? I don't even know if this is the girl's phone number or if it's someone else's." "It's worth a shot, right? It's not like you're gonna die if you give it a try."
Letting out a deep breath from nervousness, Tom took out his phone from his pocket. Dialing in the number into his contacts, he managed to type up a text.
Tom: Hey. Just wondering, but who's number is this?

Melanie was halfway through her bag of chips when her phone pinged at her. She glanced at it and saw it was a text. "Oh crap' she thought. She hoped it would be her parents explaining that they were extending their trip again.
She didn't want to look at it. If it was him, she wouldn't know how to respond. Should she be honest with him if it were him? She made a point to get Alice back for doing this to her. She took a deep breath after a swig of Sprite before swiping her note 8.
Yup. It was him. She typed up a message and sent it. God willing he wouldn't freak out or ask questions. She didn't have peoples numbers for a reason.
Melanie: This is Melanie Faye. Who is this?
The only sense of peace she had was that she never gave him her name in class. She put her phone on silent. Who knew what other classes they had together.

tomholland* the most important thing, in anything you do, is always try your hardest, because even if you try your hardest and it's not as good as you'd hoped, you still have that sense of not letting yourself down. i say i think you say Looking back at his best friend, he let out a soft sigh. "I texted her." Ned smiled, looking almost proud. "Do you know how cool this is? You could possibly have a girlfriend by the end of the school year!" Looking at him in bewilderment, he shook his head in disagreement. There was no way, he just met this girl and Ned is over here acting like as if they're officially boyfriend and girlfriend. "I have no interest. We only had a casual conversation, it didn't mean anything. Plus Ned, you're making it sound like we're dating and I'm not sure if I like that." Smirking, Ned wiggled his eyebrows.
Rolling his eyes, he was soon taken back when his phone notified him that he had a new text message. Swiping his phone to unlock it, he read the message. Melanie Faye? Looking at Ned in confusion, he showed him the text message. "Know anyone by the name Melanie Faye?" Eyes widening, he had a huge grin on his face. "Melanie Faye?! Bro, she's popular! Not to forget that she's hot, too!" Pulling a disapproval look on his face, he muttered. "Not sure if using the word 'hot' is appropriate. If she's popular, then what is she doing talking to me?"
Shrugging his shoulders, Tom sighed. He stared at his screen for a little while, trying to think what to say next. Biting onto his lip, he began typing.
Tom: I managed to get your number by a girl? She just gave me a note with a number on it and I'm not sure why. I'm Tom Holland, pretty sure you know me.

Melanie was leaving the cafeteria by the time she got a reply from his number. She stared at her phone as she walked. When she came to classroom 120 for Chemistry she sat down before replying.
Melanie: I don't know you. I'm sorry someone gave my number away. You can trash it if you want.
She sighed, slouching in her seat. It was then that one of the Juniors tapped her shoulder to get her attention. It was a girl, someone who liked to talk to her in recent years. "Sorry...I just wanted to say hello." She whispered. Melanie shrugged but greeted her with a hello before turning back to the front. She wondered if she would run into Tom again. She also wondered if he had put the pieces together or if her thought the number belonged to Alice.

Turning back to his locker, he grabbed stuff for his upcoming class once the bell rang. Turning to look at Ned, he closed his locker, sliding on his backpack onto his shoulders again. "Ready for class?" Nodding, they both started heading to their next class together. It was kinda nice having Ned at least to one of his classes. He's basically his only friend, having him around makes him feel a lot more better.
Opening the door to their class, he went in after Ned. Looking around the class, he suddenly found the girl he was talking to. "Shit," Tom whispered to himself. Looking the other way, he tried his best to try and avoid making eye contact with her; maybe even look at her. Ned didn't seem to realize how Tom was reacting, which is good. Holding onto the straps of his backpack, he asked Ned where they should sit. Choosing a spot, they both sat right next to each other.
Fuck, why did he have to be here right now? Swallowing nervously, he turned to look at Ned, trying to make some kind of conversation to ease his nerves. "Will you be free tonight?" "Yeah, basically. Why?" Shrugging his shoulders, he started to take his stuff out. "I was just wondering if you'd like to go somewhere to eat." Nodding, he agreed to going after school. Every now and then, Tom would peek to look at the girl, hoping she wasn't feeling the same way he was.

Melanie fixed herself to preparing for class, taking out her notebook and a pencil. She liked scientific things and chemistry was something she looked forward to. She stared the symbols on the board, waiting for class to start.
It was when more students walked in that Melanie recognized tom almost immediately. She tried not to notice him. She heard them take a seat behind her somewhere and she glanced secretly over her shoulder at Tom. She hadn't gotten a reply from him so she figured she must have shoed him away. Maybe that was for the best?
Melanie made a point to go out to the ranch after school. Riding would take her mind off things. She only hoped she would survive the rest of the day.

Looking at him confusingly, he raised an eyebrow. "You alright man? You look a little pale." He asked, concern lacing around his words. Looking towards his direction, he nodded. "Yeah, just a little nervous." For fucks sake Ned, there's the girl right in front of us and I'm trying my hardest to not freak the fuck out.
Sulking back in his chair, he let out a sigh before he realized that he never replied to the text. Should he? Looking at the teacher, he seemed like he was about to begin since the class was basically filled up at this point. Biting down on his bottom lip, he looked at Ned to see if he was distracted. Sure enough, he was. Secretly pulling his phone out of his pocket, he swiped his phone open. Pulling up his messages, he started typing underneath his desk.
Tom: Trash it away? They must've given me this number for a reason, right? Are you sure you don't know me?

Melanie's eyes flew to her phone when the screen light shown even though she had her phone face down on her desk. She had a lot of freedom because of her parents work, but she rarely took advantage of it. Wandering what tom had to say was an exception.
She read the text and thought long and hard before choosing to make a reply.
Melanie: we talked in homeroom.
She didn't know what else to say. She put her phone down quietly and began scribbling notes in her notebook, thinking of how much drama she was setting herself up for. She would definitely want to go out riding after today even if she had to take the bus.

Setting his phone onto his desk, he picked up his pen, listening to the teacher speak as he took notes. He tried his very best to avoid the girl, just looking at her made him feel slightly uncomfortable. Did she really not want to speak to him anymore?
Hearing his phone silently vibrate, he picked it up quickly to see the text. They spoke before? Looking up slightly confused, his eyes suddenly widened when he realized what she mean. Is.. is the girl that he talked to Melanie Faye? Holy fucking shit!
Quickly slapping on Ned's shoulder, Ned looked at Tom in a rather annoying way. "What?!" He whispered. Showing him his phone screen, he pointed at the text with his finger. "The girl that I talked to in my first class is Melanie Faye!" Slightly opening his mouth from shock, he quickly grinned. "Bro, let's fucking go! Are you going to hit her up?"
Nodding his head, he just slightly shrugged his shoulders. "Not really. Like I've said, I'm not really interested in her." Looking slightly disappointed, Ned sighed. "Come on dude! Are you seriously going to turn this down?" Looking back at his phone, he started to ignore Ned when he began texting back.
Tom: So you're Melanie Faye. I've heard about you from my friend, apparently you're popular?

Melanie wrote down basic chemistry equations perfectly happy to listen to the teachers lecture up until her phone lit up again. She put her pencil down while the teacher moved to the display case on the left and read the text message there. Popular. She didn't mind the word too much but she considered herself like everyone else. She didn't want to seem snobby to Tom. She didn't know why he wouldn't delete and forgot about her number. Most guys felt they had no chance with her.
She wondered if he wouldn't mind the truth as much as she didn't want to think of him as below her. She text him back, then went back to scribbling notes just as the teacher returned to the whiteboard for more equations.
Melanie: I'm the same as anyone else but yes my name is Melanie Faye.

Reading her reply, he didn't seem to understand. How exactly was she different? She's pretty, popular and smart. Wasn't that every popular kid ever? Maybe she didn't want to seem like a stuck-up person. Twiddling his fingers on the keyboard, he didn't really know how to reply back.
What was he supposed to do now that he has her phone number? They've only talked once. The girl who seemed to have given him Melanie's number is insane. She probably gave it to him to try to make himself seem like a complete fool; trying to go after a girl who's top notch.
What even was the girl's name? He's seen her around before and they've talked a little bit, but he never cared enough to pay attention to her. Besides, she wasn't really the nicest person when it came to Tom. She was usually in the group of people who saw him like as if he was a person of lower rank.
Oh, right. Alice! That was her name. Alice and Melanie must be friends, or else why would she blurt out that she saw her ex down the hallway to her? But then again, it kinda fitted her that she would just keep blabbering on to some stranger about her personal life. She just can never seem to keep that mouth of hers shut.
Tom: I managed to get your number from Alice. Do you know what that's about?

Melanie glanced at the clock and noticed they had twenty minutes left. She sighed. She didn't mind class but for the first couple of hours it sure had been a ride. She looked at his next reply and had to try hard not to snicker aloud.
Melanie knew Alice would have done almost anything to get her a decent social life but melanie liked her time spent alone at home or on the ranch, or anywhere else for that matter. No one really bothered her. She wouldn't expect tom to be any different. He knew who Alice was but Melanie had never heard Alice mention Tom.
Melanie: Idk. Do you two know each other?

Glancing back at his phone, he sighed. Should he tell Melanie how he feels about her? Probably not. He wouldn't want to ruin a friendship that he barely knows about. Maybe Alice has changed ever since. He highly doubts it though.
Tom: Yeah, we do. We're not really friends though, hardly even know her.
He remembers meeting her his freshman year. They had a class together and Tom was basically forced to sit with her. Even though he still didn't know who she was, just looking at her made him feel uncomfortable. Something about her just gave him a bad vibe, and he didn't know how to read into it.
Having to sit next to her didn't help, either. She would've kept nagging at the teacher, asking to move seats. Of course, the teacher didn't allow it and because of that, she was pretty mean to Tom. Being called names in front of his face and ruining his days wasn't fun. Man, did he wish she could've moved to another spot as well.

Melanie didn't want to ask about the details. She wouldn't want him prying into her past either. Not that she had many bad experiences...
She stared at her phone for a while before responding.
Melanie: Yeah...she has a mind of her own...sorry if she gave you trouble.
The bell rang and melanie wanted to talk to Alice about the situation. She gathered her things and headed for the court yard where knew she would find her friend most likely talking to her ex.

Reading Melanie's response, he knew he should keep this a secret. Something about Melanie knowing what Alice has done to him is kind of haunting. Should he even trust Melanie as well? They might be different people, but it's usually whenever a girl is friends with another girl, they're usually alike. Is Melanie like her?
Stop asking so many damn questions all the time. Before Tom could even respond to her text, the bell rang. Instead of paying attention to the class, he was putting more attention into Melanie. Watching Ned gather his stuff and leave his chair, he decided to do the same. "So where to next, Tom?" He said, grinning. "Where do you wanna go eat?" Looking at his phone, he managed to get a text. It was from his sister Emma.
Emma: Where the fuck are you?! I've been trying to look everywhere for you!
Sighing, he cupped his face with his hand out of frustration. "I'm sorry Ned, but I actually have to go looking for my damn sister. She just texted me, asking where I am." "Oh." He said, looking down. Putting his hand on Ned's shoulder, he smiled. "Hey man, don't be upset. We'll make plans, I just know that if I don't go looking for my sister right this second, then she's going to be on my ass about it all day. I promise when I'm back, we'll talk about this." Shrugging his shoulders, he nodded. Not even taking the time to reach for his locker, Tom began to speed-walk throughout the school, hoping to find his sister soon before class started again.
